![]() That was until the internet began to confuse it with a movie that never existeda genie film called Shazaam starring Sinbad. The New Statesman noted the simplest explanation for this phenomenon that people were misremembering then-basketball star Shaquille O’Neal’s starring as a genie in the awful 1996 film Kazaam. On Tuesday, he paid a visit to “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon“, then he appeared on NBC morning show “Today” on Wednesday to play Willie Geist in a game of one-on-one.ĭespite O’Neal’s 7’ 1” frame towering over Geist’s 6’ 4” body, the media personality still managed to make a shot. It was a barely-remembered magical kids movie starring Shaq as a genie. O’Neal has been busy promoting Season 2 of his TruTV series comedy series “Upload,” as well as his new beverage line, Soda Shaq. The movie was critically panned, but apparently still has a very special place in O’Neal’s heart. “Steel,” a 1997 superhero movie based on the DC comic of the same name, starred O’Neal as a military weapons designer who forges a new identity to fight back against gangs that are using the very weapons he designed. “I wouldn’t do a remake of ‘Kazaam,’ but I would do another ‘Steel’ movie,” the former NBA star wrote during a Reddit AMA session.Īlso read: Shaq Gets His Own Comedy Showcase – Can Dr. The blow to the 1996 fantasy film’s cult following, however, was followed by a glimmer of hope for fans of another Shaq classic – Warner Bros. ![]() 1.Shaquille O’Neal revealed some bad news on Wednesday for fans of his mid-’90s acting career: No, he does not want to reprise his role as the rappin’ genie in a boom box in “Kazaam.” Now you know the plot, but let’s see what else there is to know about the movie Kazaam. It’s all about knowing what you have and embracing it, people. Malik attacks Max Kazaam attacks Malik, and, long story short, they mostly live happily ever after. Kazaam gets promised a professional rapping career, and he loses sight of Max, his master. Max’s mother finally confesses about his father’s whereabouts, he sees him, and Max makes some more wishes with Kazaam, but things get stick when Malik, a friend of Max’s dad, realizes that Kazaam is a genie and wants to take advantage. All Max wants, though, is to see his father, who is absent from Max’s life. One day, Max, who is on the run from a local gang, frees the genie, and Kazaam does the whole thing where he explains about the three wishes and yadda yadda (everyone knows that you get three wishes with a genie). If you’ve never seen the movie, you’re probably not a child of the 1990s like I am, so I’ll give you a little prep course: Shaq plays Kazaam, a genie that has been locked up for thousands of years. But even though I’ve seen it so many times, there’s actually a lot I don’t know about Kazaam. Sinbad came forward stating that he starred in a skit where he was dressed as. Kazaam never got the praise that Space Jam got, but for me, it reminds me of grilled cheese and grape juice and stirrup leggings, and for that, I am thankful. A movie named Kazaam was released in 1996 starring Shaquille ONeil as a genie. But is it so bad that it’s good? Absolutely. This is the latest ‘glitch in the matrix’ that even got me. Shaq did play a genie in a tremendously unmemorable and awful movie. Can you believe it? It was a movie my older male cousins always wanted to watch, and I think I’ve seen Kazaam like 50 times. It came out around the same time as Kazaam with Shaq. One of those movies for me is Kazaam, the Shaquille O’Neill-led rapper/genie/what is this even about film that came out a whopping 20 years ago today. The movies of our youth are not necessarily the movies that we’d choose to watch as an adult, but there’s something about the nostalgia that leaves even the worst films as little bits of warm fuzziness in our hearts.
